As qualitative researchers, one request we often receive from clients is to ask 'why.' However, those who have worked with us know that we deliberately avoid directly posing the question 'why' in our conversations with their customers. Allow us to introduce you to our philosophy—our 'why NOT why.'
The Pitfalls of Directly Asking 'Why'
Asking someone 'why' they do something might seem like a straightforward approach, but it often has unintended consequences. It tends to put individuals on the defensive, prompting them to justify their actions with a top-of-mind, surface-level, rational response. However, this response might not necessarily reflect the true motivations or underlying reasons behind their behavior.
Unveiling the Emotional Motivation: The 'Ultimate Why'
To truly understand the 'ultimate why,' we go beyond the rational and delve into the realm of emotional motivation. As humans, we are wired to provide quick responses, find shortcuts, and create habits. Our disciplined approach recognizes that merely scratching the surface won't unveil the genuine motivations. Instead, we seek to explore the context around individuals' actions, allowing them the space to reveal their actual motivations—the ones that truly drive their behavior.
The Power of Going Beyond the Surface
Rather than directly asking 'why,' we adopt a more nuanced approach. We probe for examples, thoughts, and scenarios, using stimuli to draw out the context around their behaviors and feelings. This method allows us to bypass the immediate defenses and tap into a richer narrative that transcends the superficial.
A Disciplined Approach for Meaningful Conversations
Our choice to avoid the direct 'why' is grounded in a belief that this disciplined approach leads to more meaningful conversations. By giving respondents the space to reflect and share in-depth insights, we move beyond the obvious to uncover powerful motivations. It's in these moments that marketing strategies find their true anchor.
The Power of Curiosity and Context
In the world of qualitative research, the 'why NOT why' approach is a celebration of curiosity and a commitment to understanding the context that shapes human behavior. By sidestepping the direct question, we embark on a journey that leads to more powerful, nuanced insights. As we navigate this path, we invite fellow researchers and clients alike to embrace the beauty of the 'ultimate why' and the richness it adds to our collective understanding of human motivations. Here's to more meaningful conversations and insights that resonate beyond the surface.
